Tan Chee Koon

Tan Chee Koon is the Executive Director of the National Volunteer Centre (NVC) of Singapore. The Centre's mission is to promote volunteerism as a way of life in Singapore, across all the different sectors. She was appointed in August 1999 to establish the publicly funded Centre, which currently operates with a team of 12. Before assuming the challenge of getting more Singaporeans into active citizenship, she was the Director of Corporate Communications of the National Heritage Board, which administers the National Museums of Singapore and the National Archives. In this capacity, she was responsible for building the pool of museum guides (docents) of the three national museums as well as raising volunteers for the popular Children's Discovery Gallery, working with the Friends of the Museum organisation. Over this period, the board successfully attracted locals to join its docent pool. Tan Chee Koon is an active church volunteer. She runs a tuition centre for low-income children in her church's neighbourhood, and she sits on the Management Committee of her church's new childcare and student care center. She also is a member of a local community council.
