Celebrating Legacy and Leadership
This Voices celebrates legacy and leadership in Volunteer Engagement, just in time for the International Volunteer Managers Day (IVMDay) Celebration of “Legacy and Leadership” on November 5, 2026. Here, Voices Co-section Editor Tracey O’Neill brings together leaders in the field to reflect on a person whose legacy they would like to honor, celebrate today, or look out for in the future. O’Neill also highlights the Ellis Archive Trailblazers, a collection of profiles of individuals who greatly influenced the evolution of Volunteer Management practices.
I love the idea for this…
Fri, 10/30/2026I love the idea for this article; this format is great and I hope many others take it up!
Special thanks to Andy Fryar for bringing up Ivan Schier, whose name I haven't heard much in recent years. His idea of "glad gifts" is an important and overlooked one: I've benefited a lot from asking volunteers, "When you started volunteering here, what did you hope to contribute?"
His writing is not only deeply insightful but full of heart. He isn't trying to sound like a Harvard Business Review article unlike too many others in the field. Thank you Andy!
